NUDE Advanced Probiotic Skincare Moisturising Body Cream Review

Image borrowed from http://www.lovelula.com/
Rating:3/5, available from Lovelula for £19.50 (+p&p), Naturisimo for £26.00 (inc p&p).

NUDE skincare is the brand that has pioneered the use of pre and probiotics in anti-aging skincare. That's not our opinion, and we've not checked it, but the packaging says so.

According to the promotional literature using probiotics in their products means that they activate cellular renewal and slow the aging process, the blend of pre and probiotics maintain and strengthens the skin by moisturising and defending against free radicals and "aging irritation" (we don't know what that is, but we have a sneaking suspicion that Great Uncle Archie probably knows what they are talking about).

All of NUDEs products contain the following 4 ingredients:
Pre and probiotics (from natural sugars and milk): activate cellular renewal and repair and protect the skin.
Peptides (from milk): stimulate collagen production to firm skin and reduce wrinkles.
Hyaluronic Acid (from milk): locks water into the skin to hydrate and smooth fine lines.
Antioxidants (from natural plant sources): eliminate free radicals to protect the skin against aging.

Sounds good, let's refer to the promotional chitchat once more;
NUDE skincare's probiotic technology has been clinically proven to deliver the following five results.
1. Activate cellular renewal by up to 70%.
2. Reduce cellular damage by up to 50%.
3. Prevent cellular damage by up to 35%.
4. Hydrate the skin and rebalance the skin
5. Restore healthy, younger looking skin

Fancy. But...we can't find this research so we did the next best thing and put on our TBT testing hats! So far, none of us are exhibiting any superpowers which has left us a little deflated...but that was a long shot.

First off, this product smells great, lovelula say it smells like hibiscus...we think it smells more like jasmine. Either way it smells lovely and is not too over-powering. But lets break some of the ingredients down before we get too excited!

Hexyldecanol is a used as an emollient, humectant, and skin-conditioning agent in cosmetics. It has a low viscosity and because of this it creates a base in products that is easily spreadable. It's been deemed safe, however a study published in Contact Dermatitis did mention “severe dermatitis mimicking deep vein thrombosis caused by hexyldecanol” . hmmm....no such reaction with us, so we're good to go!

Baobab oil is derived from the Baobab tree which grows in Africa. It's suitable to use directly on the skin, but because it is so rich even if it's diluted you'll still absorb all of the loveliness (vitamins A, C, D, E and F and essential fatty acids omega 3, 6 and 9)! Baobab oil absorbs quickly, moisturises, rejuvenates and renews cell membranes, improves skin tone and elasticity, encourages cell regeneration and does not clog the pores. Hmm...sounds like we should invest in a bottle soon!

Cupuacu butter is a rich butter derived from the seeds of the cupuacu fruit which contains a range of phytosterols. It acts as an emollient, and skin conditioner, helping to restore the skin hydration and elasticity. It also reduces cell degenaration, restoring flexibility and moisture retention to the skin. It can also be used on the hair, if this takes your fancy click here to buy some.

Galactaric Acid, derived from apple pectin (a carbohydrate found in some plant cell walls, and can also come from lemons and beetroot pulp), this ingredient helps to absorb free radicals created by ageing and our environment.

Sodium Hyaluronate is derived from wheat and is said to be one of the most powerful moisturisers in the world and it can assist in the appearance of smoother skin. All of us have trouble with wheat, sometimes we get hives if we get within 5 steps of the bread aisle but this hasn't caused us any trouble.

Lingonberry seed oil is rich in organic acids, beta-carotene (provitamin A), Vitamins B1, B2, B3 & C, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, omega-3 fatty acids and plant sterols. All of this means that it is superfood for your skin; essential fatty acids are necessary for skin cell maintenance, plant sterols reduce redness and sensitivity, promote tissue regeneration and have anti-inflammatory properties. On top of that studies have shown that topically applied essential fatty acids improve the health and appearance of the skin, helping to speed up wound healing and aid moisture retention. If we ever find a bottle of this stuff we will let you know!

Arachidyl glucoside is a surfactant and emulsifier, derived from coconut and palm trees but it can be derived from peanuts so it is an ingredient to keep an eye out for and double check if you have a peanut allergy.

Bifida ferment lysate as yet we've not found any research or information on this ingredient other than the one done by L'Oréal Research, published in the Journal of Experimental Dermatology, which suggests that this ingredient reduces skin sensitivity and might help with skin barrier function.

Galactoarabinan is a high functioning polysaccharide derived from north American larch trees which grow at very high altitudes. Studies have shown that it increases skin cell renewal efficacy, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, reduces transepidermal water loss, increases the dispersion of UV filters thus making sun screen even across the skin, increases skin radiance and tightens the skin. For more in depth info about this ingredient click here

The following ingredients are skin conditioners (we've not been able to find any other information on these ingredients, if you can fill in the blanks let us know in the comments!):

  • Lactobacillus/yerba santa ferment extract is an extract obtained by fermentating yerba santa using Lactobacillus.
  • Alpha-glucan oligosaccharide - skin conditioner with no evidence that it is harmful.
  • Milk Protein
So. . .aside from smelling good, absorbing quickly and being packed full of magical ingredients...what did we think?

It's nothing special. After a months use none of us can see a difference between this to our usual moisturising regime (mainly olive oil, but sometimes we sub in other oils). In fact, our skin doesn't look as good as it usually does as a result of using this body cream.

It's a great idea, and perhaps if you're switching from a less natural product to this one you will see a difference but we can't say that we have. It does moisturise, it absorbs quickly and it smells nice....other than that we can't say much. It's a bit of a disappointment given the price tag and our initial eagerness, but we're just going to have to accept it!

We hope you've enjoyed reading! If you've tried any of the NUDE skincare range let us know in the comments!
