Urtekram Rose Shampoo

Rating: 5/5

Where do I start with this one?
I was first introduced to this shampoo back in the 90's when holidaying in Denmark. In Denmark, they are lucky enough to have this stuff sold in 500ml bottles (or they used to be).

It was mild, was suitable for everyone and it made our hair shiny, clean and bouncy.... And it's still as good!

This mild shampoo lathers up perfectly, has a really subtle rose scent and gives your hair shine and bounce - it's definitely one of the best shampoos that I have used! On top of that it is 100% plant based, contains no chemicals, added-tives, and is therefore SLS/SLES free (ingredient list below)!!!!! Magical and marvellous.

Urtekram also do conditioners, shower gel, body scrubs, baby toiletries, body lotion, toothpaste, deodorants and soaps but I have yet to try them, so I can't vouch for them! However, they do other shampoos such as lavender, chamomile, aloe vera, tea tree and brown sugar.

Urtekram shampoos are available at some health stores and are stocked by lovelula and goodness direct. From what I can tell, goodness direct is cheaper and have a larger selection but lovelula's delivery is faster & they include a very cute angel card in your delivery.

If you've tried it or have tried any of Urtekram's beauty products then let me know in the comments section!

Ingredients: Water, vegetable glycerine*, aloe vera*, coconut and corn sugar soap, sunflower oil glyceride, citric acid, rose geranium essential oil*, rose flower extract*, jasmine flower extract*.

  1. Hi there

I really got excited at the prospect of finding a natural shapoo that works so was happy to read your review..

However and i really hate to break this to you
This shampoo is not that natural and it really is not your fault as the ingredients state

    "coconut and corn sugar soap"

I cant believe how deceiving this is as i thought that meant its cleansing agents came from soap which are not harmful.

The true translation (found on their own website) of "coconut and corn sugar soap" =

    "cocamidopropyl betaine, coco-glucoside, sodium coco-sulfate"

So as well as cocamidopropyl betaine there is Sodium coco sulfate which is pretty similar to sodium lauryl sulfate (it is actually a blend of SLS and other sulphates) and carry the same risks of SLS.

im really dissapointed by a so called "natural" company to go ahead and mislead people in that way - very very sad!

can i ask what shampoo you are using? I am looking for a shampoo that cleans but doesnt dry my hair. I want to get away from silicones (cant find a truly natural alternative) and really dont have time for oil treatments . Is the Cioccolatina Argan & Cocoa Butter Liquid Shampoo any good? im a bit skeptical as i want some bit of foam to tackle my thick hair.

    anyway great blog!

  3. Hi Freddy!
Thanks for letting us know - it has completely shattered our relationship with urtekram (and with good reason!)
We're currently working on a post about shampoos - what hair type do you have and is it coloured? let us know and we'll do our very best to point you in the right direction.
Our shampoo post will also discuss ways to wash the hair without drying it out.
    Thanks again!

P.S. sorry about deleting my prior post, I made way too many typos (clearly the shock has affected my typing abilities!)

  4. Hi Layla

    Thank you for your response!

i felt bad being the bearer of such news but i felt it should have been mentioned. I really am sad to see how these days the words organic and natural being written all over products yet they still are deceiving us and including harmful ingredients. It seems harder to find honest people!

My hair is like straw and gets coloured alot but it is a necessity. The only way to describe it perhaps is it is like hair with no cuticle!
It is also thick so i prefer something that has some foamy effect so that i find i dont have to pour a third of a bottle of shampoo to get coverage lol

So my hair is stripped of it cuticle and Oils dont work because no matter which oil i have tried it leaves it with an greasy feel where as products with silicones have a nicer slip feel which is more silky if you know what i mean.

i have tried a few natural ones but not come across the Cioccolatina Argan & Cocoa Butter Liquid Shampoo which you reviewed which sounded good. Do you think that works like a silicone based one?

I have found more success with conditioners but still searching for the one!

As for conditioners - The John Masters Citrus and Neroli Detangle has a silky feel to it but is still a bit too light for my hair but still one of the best i have found so far. The honeysuckle rose conditioner by aubrey organics is also quite good but then leaves me with slightly greasy hair as it is heavy on the oil content i guess lol

I look forward to you writing a post about shampoos which is my main problem!

  5. It's my pleasure! what colour is your hair? and have you tried henna? this thread discusses henna if you are interested - http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?p=1589325
Please don't be tempted by the bars @ lush they did more harm than good to my hair and actually seemed to dry my hair out. If you can find some proper henna powder then that might be the way to go.

The cioccolatina shampoo doesn't work like silicone based shampoos but it might be worth using it as an occasional treatment given that it is very nourishing. The trick is working a little bit into the hair, it won't feel foamy but it will help the hair a bit. Intelligent nutrients spray on detangler is also quite nourishing, in my experience it doesn't leave the hair greasy. Have you tried the yogurt hair mask that we listed? http://treasureboxesandtrinkets.blogspot.com/2011/01/time-for-treats-oil-yogurt-conditioner.html to reduce greasyness add 3 drops of lime essential oil to the mix.

Let me know how you get on!
